Story
0.1% World (好想去你的世界爱你) is a romantic fantasy movie released on Valentine’s Day in 2022. This movie is directed by Sun Lin (孙琳) and written by Wang Bo (王博). 0.1% World‘s literal translated title is Hao Xiang Qu Ni De Shi Jie Ai Ni, or I Really Want To Go To Your World and Love You. It stars actor Patrick Shih from Someday Or One Day (2019), and Zhou Yi Ran from Run For Young (2020).
0.1% World (好想去你的世界爱你) is about an aspiring architect, An Yi, who works as an assistant. Despite going above and beyond her job, An Yi is still discriminated against as a woman in architecture. Because of her identity, her peers and superiors scrutinize An Yi’s designs. An Yi has a long crush on one of her co-workers, Chen Ming Yu, and can’t get herself to confess to him. While out at the job site, An Yi sees him with another female co-worker, Fang Fang, and walks away. Not watching her step, An Yi rolls on a bar lying on the floor and injures her head. The head injury causes her mind to be connected to Gao Ang, a pianist across the world in Germany. An Yi and Gao Ang can hear each other’s thoughts, and their actions can physically affect the other person if one of their heart rate rises to 100 bpm.
The fantasy aspect made it fun and exciting to watch as these two tried to get along despite not being physically present. However, the fantasy wasn’t straightforward or I didn’t understand the trigger. While it was clear that once one of the two’s heart rates raised to 100 bpm, it would cause the other person to feel or do the same as the one who raised the heart rate. I understand that each individual’s heart rate is different based on one’s health. However, some actions still seemed to affect the other person even though it seems like the 100 bpm wasn’t triggered. For example, the lactose intolerant and the coffee drinking scene. Two of those actions wouldn’t cause one’s heart rate to jump high unless one’s heart rate is already closer to 100bpm at rest or possess an abnormal heart rate. Yet, the other person felt the stomach pain and caffeine of the other. Besides, how did they know each other’s weaknesses when they hadn’t talked about them in the first place. I’m not a medical professional, so I could be wrong, but other emotions and actions were taken that I felt wouldn’t have reached 100 bpm.
As a type of romance movie with anguish in it, it wasn’t really my cup of favorite tea. There was a lot of fun bickering, some heart-to-heart talks, and then suddenly, viewers were supposed to feel the loss of connection between the two. It was hard for me to feel the pain for An Yi and the possibility of losing the best thing in her life due to the short moment we got with the two. Was I supposed to feel the anguish with them because they are that 0.1% of soulmates who received this connection? Or be sad about what could’ve been for their relationship? It felt like I had to use my imagination to fill the spaces where their romance could’ve been sweet and beautiful. This could have just been a subjective point, but I felt like the romance had to be imagined on my end.
The movie only hinted at it at the end, but I would’ve loved it if they highlighted Gao Ang’s depression for us to see the big impact of An Yi in his life. His actions to break the connection lacked motive if we just focus on the romance part. I think it would’ve hit the viewers harder if we were to understand his story and why he felt so much pain before the reveal at the end, instead of just relying on the fact that they are the protagonists and should end up together.
The themes of loving yourself and pursuing your dreams were present. An Yi was often looked down on as a woman in her profession. Though deep down, An Yi had it in her to step up to pursue her dreams, she had help from Gao Ang. With Gao Ang around to help An Yi see that she had to give herself the love and respect, she deserves first. An Yi was able to weed out the negative people from her life and push for her own happiness.
What I liked about this movie is the idea of the connection between human beings. It shows that if you take it upon yourself to understand someone you don’t know or don’t get along with, you may find your opinions differ. Though it was hard for An Yi and Gao Ang to connect and understand each other at first, they soon became each other’s comfort and confidant. As An Yi and Gao Ang had never met before, the understanding between the two felt more genuine.
This was cliche but cute. The scenes where they connected and how it was directed were well done to feel their connection. It would’ve been great to see more scenes of their worlds colliding. The length and the story itself felt like it gave a conclusive story to Gao Ang and An Yi’s romance. While there probably wouldn’t have been much more to add to flesh out certain emotions, I think this was still a decent watch.
