Drama Recap: Be Passionately in Love

Wang An Yu [王安宇] is best known for his roles in the youth-centered drama, Forever Love with Xiang Han Zhi and The Last Immortal with Zhang Lu Si. A personal favorite of his performances would have to be his portrayal of Grunt in Go Go Squid 2. In Be Passionately in Love, Wang An Yu takes on the role of Chen Lu Zhou, an intelligent but emotionally distant man shaped by a childhood lacking parental love.

Liu Hao Cun [刘浩存] is more active in the film world returns to her third small screen release. Her drama debut was Derailment with Lin Yi, but in this drama, Liu Hao Cun plays Xu Zhi, a bold young woman who approaches Chen Lu Zhou after overhearing his mother’s voice, one that sounds strikingly similar to her own late mother’s.

Synopsis: In the rainy southern city of Qingyi, a misunderstanding leads to an unexpected connection between two very different high school students: bold, spirited Xu Zhi (Liu Hao Cun) and intelligent, sensitive Chen Lu Zhou (Wang An Yu). As playful teasing turns into flirtation, they begin to develop a bond that feels deeper than just young love. However when Lu Zhou’s family sends him abroad for college and Xu Zhi heads to Beijing to study architecture, they’re forced to go their separate ways… until Lu Zhou decides to abandon his studies overseas. He transfers to the same university as Xu Zhi, determined to make his feelings known and pursue her in earnest, refusing to let this second chance pass him by. (Source: Viki)

Supporting Cast

  • Wu Han Kun [吴汉坤] as Zhu Yang Qi, Chen Lu Zhou’s best friend who affectionately calls him “Lucy.” Along with Cai Ying Ying, he plays matchmaker and often acts as Chen Lu Zhou’s wingman, pushing him toward Xu Zhi.
  • Zhang Xin Yi [张昕懿] as Cai Ying Ying, Xu Zhi’s best friend and an art major. Their parents both work at the hospital, and the two girls grew up together. Due to her poor grades, Cai Ying Ying stays behind in Qingyi for another year while Xu Zhi heads to Beijing for school.
  • Zeng Li [曾黎] as Lian Hui, Chen Lu Zhou’s mother. Though strict and full of rules, her actions come from a place of deep love and concern for her son.
  • Sun Zhi Hong [孙之鸿] as Xu Guang Qi, Xu Zhi’s father. An andrology doctor, he raises his daughter alone by giving her structure while making sure to remain a constant, supportive presence in her life.
  • Ren Zhong [任重] as Cai Bin Hong, Cai Ying Ying’s father, who works as an eye doctor.
  • He Yu [何与] as Jiang Yu, a sophomore student who takes an interest in Xu Zhi.
  • Hu Bao Sen [胡宝森] as Li Ke, Chen Lu Zhou’s former high school classmate and current dormmate.

Mini-Episode Recaps

Episode 1: Exchanging Names Made Us Friends

Hoping to talk to Tan Xu about his college exam performance, Xu Zhi happens to pass by Chen Lu Zhou’s apartment and overhears a voice that sounds like her mother’s. She peeks through the window and is caught by Chen Lu Zhou, who calls her out. The next day, Xu Zhi seeks out Tan Xu again to ask for her necklace back, but he throws it off the second-floor balcony. Boldly, Xu Zhi knocks on Chen Lu Zhou’s door and asks him to help her retrieve it from a tree. With Zhu Yang Qi’s help, they manage to get it down. As thanks, and as a way to get closer to Chen Lu Zhou, she invites them to dinner. Chen Lu Zhou leaves early, and on her way to buy sweet potatoes for her grandmother, Xu Zhi runs into him again in a predicament and stands up for him.

Episode 2: Is It That Hard to Friend You on Wechat

Though Chen Lu Zhou begins to warm up to Xu Zhi, he remains wary of her, assuming Tan Xu is her boyfriend. He declines her WeChat friend request. When Xu Zhi hears that Chen Lu Zhou will be staying at a family friend Mr. Fu’s mountain villa, she and Cai Ying Ying use “vacation” as an excuse to tag along and try to get closer to him. While driving down the mountain to fetch bottled water for his picky younger brother, Xu Zhi joins him and reveals they’ve actually met before at a basketball competition. Their growing interactions start to spark Chen Lu Zhou’s interest in Xu Zhi, despite believing she’s already taken.

Episode 3: Lucy Met A Tough Challenge!

Xu Zhi helps Chen Lu Zhou land a job creating an ad for Mr. Fu’s tea farm, with her and Cai Ying Ying as the models. After a tense conversation with his mother, Chen Lu Zhou becomes moody. To cheer him up, Xu Zhi takes him on a drive and finds him a four-leaf clover. Later that night, she comes clean, confessing that her true reason for wanting to get close to him is not romantic, but because she desperately wants to meet his mother, who sounds just like her own late mom. Though relieved to hear she’s not dating Tan Xu, Chen Lu Zhou is disappointed and refuses her request, even if she’s willing to pretend to be his girlfriend just to meet his mom.

Episode 4: Xu Zhi, Turn Around and Look at Me

Chen Lu Zhou overhears Xu Zhi defending him in a conversation with Mr. Fu and is touched by her loyalty. Later, he accompanies Xu Zhi and Cai Ying Ying to view a meteor shower. During the outing, Xu Zhi opens up about her dream of becoming an architect, inspired by her late mother.

Episode 5: No Feelings for Me at All?

Chen Lu Zhou attends a lunch with his mother, who sets him up to meet Professor Jiang’s daughter, someone who is also planning to study abroad. Back on the mountain, instead of acting jealous, Xu Zhi and Chen Lu Zhou spend their last night watching a movie together, creating a moment of unspoken romantic tension. After their return, Xu Zhi realizes that the two has gone back to their own lives and is a little upset. Meanwhile, during a basketball match with Tan Xu, Chen Lu Zhou gets injured.

Episode 6: What Does It Take To Be Familiar?

Chen Lu Zhou visits an andrology clinic, where the doctor turns out to be Xu Zhi’s father. Having heard his name from Xu Zhi and Cai Ying Ying, her father assumes he’s Xu Zhi’s boyfriend and pushes for him for a thorough examination. Later, Xu Zhi and Chen Lu Zhou grab a meal together. When she insists on splitting the bill and Chen Lu Zhou is disappointed when he sees that she doesn’t treat Feng Jin the same way. He invites Xu Zhi’s team to assist him at a racetrack job. When Xu Zhi overhears Lv Yang mocking Chen Lu Zhou, she challenges him to a race. If she wins, he must apologize to Lu Zhou and hand over the prize money. Xu Zhi wins, but ends up injured in the process.

Episode 7: So, You Like Her?

After receiving an apology from Lv Yang, Chen Lu Zhou learns that the reason Xu Zhi raced against Lv Yang was because of him. Back at the hotel, Xu Zhi reveals that her old knee injury flares up into arthritis whenever it rains.

Xu Zhi sets up a nail art booth to earn extra money. Chen Lu Zhou offers to be her first customer, only to be caught by his mom and her news crew, who were out filming content for story ideas.

Episode 8: A Rainy Day Not So Annoying

After unofficially meeting Chen Lu Zhou’s mom and hearing her voice, Xu Zhi realizes how different their personalities are. Lu Zhou forgets his phone, and Xu Zhi searches for him in the rain. With her internet down at home, she asks Chen Lu Zhou to check her college entrance exam results: she scored 738, while he got 713.

Episode 9: Whether the Moon is Full or Not

Xu Zhi sees a violin in Chen Lu Zhou’s room and tells him that if they’re still alive when they’re old, she wants him to play her a song. As one of the few students not from No. 1 High School attending a television program, she joins the group for dinner and they invite the mysterious top student. At the dinner, Chen Lu Zhou tries to get close to Xu Zhi, but she keeps her distance to avoid being associated with him.

Episode 10: Because the Puppy Is Wagging Its Tail

Xu Zhi and Chen Lu Zhou talk under the fireworks about why she doesn’t want to be introduced to his friends. In the moment, she explains, “Because the puppy is wagging its tail.” Meanwhile, Chen Lu Zhou and Zhu Yang Qi get into their first fight, leading Yang Qi to seek treatment from Dr. Cai. Chen Lu Zhou surprises Xu Zhi with tickets to her favorite movie, but the two end up arguing.

Episode 11: Happy Birthday, Architect Xu

Xu Zhi stands up for Gu Yan, and the two have a heart-to-heart about Chen Lu Zhou. She decides to react to her feelings even though the relationship that might not last. Chen Lu Zhou barely makes it to the end of Xu Zhi’s birthday after attending a family dinner. When he finds her, they return to his place, and while watching a movie, they share their first kiss. 💋

Episode 12: Actually, You Understand Me Well

Xu Zhi’s father catches her and Chen Lu Zhou flirting outside their home. While he tells Lu Zhou to return for a follow-up visit. During the appointment, although he shows approval of their relationship because he enjoys seeing Xu Zhi happy, he firmly warns Lu Zhou not to hurt her. Lu Zhou accompanies Xu Zhi to get her ears pierced and chooses a pair of star-shaped earrings for her.

Episode 13: As Long As It Still Rains in Qingyi

The Qingyi crew shares a final late-night snack before going their separate ways. Though urged to come home by her father, Xu Zhi checks off her final wish, to watch the sunrise with someone she likes. She and Chen Lu Zhou part ways with a final hug under the morning sky.

Episode 14: The Untouchable Lover

In Ruichang, Chen Lu Zhou and his family gets caught in a bombing incident. Xu Zhi hears about the incident on the news and worries when she can’t reach him. After he finally returns her call, the two barely keep in touch as Xu Zhi begins her studies at Huaguang. With the bombing incident frightening Chen Lu Zhou’s mother and she allows him return to Qingyi. He returns without telling anyone and secretly delivers pain medication for Xu Zhi’s arthritis at Huaguang.

Episode 15: We’ll Meet as We Expected

Xu Zhi meets Zhu Yang Qi for lunch in Beijing and upon returning to class, Yang Qi finds Chen Lu Zhou sitting in his seat. While Xu Zhi fends off suitors at Huaguang, Lu Zhou takes part-time jobs while waiting to get off the waitlist. Upon surprising Yang Qi and Xu Zhi in Beijing, Cai Ying Ying discovers Lu Zhou’s return and is forced to keep it a secret. On his first day at Huaguang, Chen Lu Zhou and Xu Zhi meet again at the cafeteria.

Episode 16: I’m Trying to Win My Ex Back

To get close to Xu Zhi, Chen Lu Zhou obtains the architecture students’ schedule. When he finds a chance to talk to her, he shares why he’s back in Beijing and at Huaguang. Although Xu Zhi is now willing to talk to him, she still tries to keep her distance, while Chen Lu Zhou does everything he can to get close again. 🪟⚡💋

Episode 17: Every Step He Takes Is Towards You

Although it seems like Xu Zhi is warming up to him again, Chen Lu Zhou becomes upset when he sees her out with Tan Xu while he’s out to eat with Zhu Yang Qi. He’s hurt that Xu Zhi didn’t tell him they were hanging out. Despite his frustration, he waits to have breakfast with her the next day but she doesn’t show up. Unaware and having overslept, Xu Zhi later attends Chen Lu Zhou’s basketball game, where he confronts her, expressing that he feels she isn’t taking his feelings seriously. The two part on bad terms. Later, Xu Zhi learns from Zhu Yang Qi on how much Chen Lu Zhou internalizes his struggles, but how he only makes an effort to when it comes to her.
