Wang An Yu [王安宇] is best known for his roles in the youth-centered drama, Forever Love with Xiang Han Zhi and The Last Immortal with Zhang Lu Si. A personal favorite of his performances would have to be his portrayal of Grunt in Go Go Squid 2. In Be Passionately in Love, Wang An Yu takes on the role of Chen Lu Zhou, an intelligent but emotionally distant man shaped by a childhood lacking parental love.

Liu Hao Cun [刘浩存] is more active in the film world returns to her third small screen release. Her drama debut was Derailment with Lin Yi, but in this drama, Liu Hao Cun plays Xu Zhi, a bold young woman who approaches Chen Lu Zhou after overhearing his mother’s voice, one that sounds strikingly similar to her own late mother’s.

Synopsis: In the rainy southern city of Qingyi, a misunderstanding leads to an unexpected connection between two very different high school students: bold, spirited Xu Zhi (Liu Hao Cun) and intelligent, sensitive Chen Lu Zhou (Wang An Yu). Later, Chen Lu Zhou transfers to Ruicheng and feels disheartened that Xu Zhi doesn’t seem to care, even though their fifth anniversary is approaching. While watching the De Sica film that Xu Zhi had recommended, he’s overcome with emotion. Drama Review

★★☆☆☆ Rating: 2.8/5

Initial Setup Problems

This drama started off a bit hard to follow. Even though I wasn’t always fully focused, it didn’t draw me in or clearly set up the characters and story. It took about a third of the way through before I grasped who the characters were and their emotional baggage, especially their relationships. The storytelling felt disjointed, making it tough to understand why Chen Lu Zhou wasn’t loved or why his family relationships were strained until much later. Because the backstories weren’t clearly laid out, I had to piece things together myself, which made it harder to emotionally connect. I’m glad I skimmed most of the novel but I can see non-novel readers struggle to grasp the story setup.

Character Backstory

Xu Zhi, the female lead, is shown as nonchalant and emotionally detached and independent, likely due to losing her mom young and being raised by her dad. But this dynamic doesn’t come together until later. Early on, the story focuses on her mysterious racing background and her mother’s death, which wasn’t handled well emotionally. It felt more like a convenient plot device to connect her to the male lead rather than showing real impact on her. Similarly, the racing element and the male lead’s photography hobby felt oddly inserted and didn’t reveal much about their characters.

Chen Lu Zhou had a bit better setup between the two. He is a rich boy who was adopted, at six years old and once overheard his father and grandmother’s dislike for him. He tries hard to meet their expectations to avoid being left behind, while feeling clear favoritism for the biological Chen younger brother, Chen Xing Qi. He sulks about it and avoid Father Chen’s expectations while still hoping for some genuine familial love. At the same time, he doesn’t put that anger onto Chen Xing Qi, so while he appears distant from Chen Xing Qi, he still cares for him.

Performance as Redemption

Wang An Yu’s performance shines! He nails Chen Lu Zhou’s sadness and loneliness, and his shy admiration toward Xu Zhi comes through clearly. The “he fell first and fell harder” trope made me swoon through Wang An Yu’s depiction. Usually we have a cold male lead and a soft female lead, but not in this drama! The role reversal between leads, where Xu Zhi struggles to express herself while Chen Lu Zhou is the more doting, emotional one, feels refreshing and endearing.

Liu Hao Cun took longer for me to connect with, mainly because her character was messier and harder to relate to. However, she portrayed the balance between interest and love well, and her chemistry with Wang An Yu improved as Xu Zhi’s feelings became clear. hile her performance didn’t bring anything new, it wasn’t disappointing either. The difference with this one compared to her other works is that I felt her chemistry with Wang An Yu more than her past co-stars. I think it’s because this one was romance-centered, while the other works I have seen her in focused more on other elements, despite her having a romantic interest.

Family Dynamics and Supporting Characters

I adored the single dad dynamic and appreciated the fun, comedic approach they took to show the dads as caring and loving, trying as hard as they can to be a parent and a friend through setting boundaries, allowing their children to be independent and experience life, while still protecting them with parental care. That was a nice touch. I also liked seeing the distinct environments of Chen Lu Zhou and Xu Zhi’s upbringing without adding jarring scenes to make it super obvious.

3 Things That Drew Me In

  • The Relationship and Emotional Growth: I adore how they come together and talk about feelings and hardships with no real misunderstandings. Their relationship feels warm and wholesome. Xu Zhi comforts shy, sensitive Chen Lu Zhou, who spoils her with affection and time. They balance school and time together well. No unnecessary jealousy after they get together. The sweetest scenes show acts of kindness reminding us they’re meant to heal each other’s loneliness, that they deeply understand each other. Their love story, setting aside the novel’s steaminess and awkward fake kisses, is really wholesome once you piece together the messy first half, which sets them as lonely souls. I could really feel them go from friends to lovers to family – just through their presence.
  • Pacing and Emotional Payoff: The story takes time exploring their emotional distance, how they avoid addressing feelings, and slowly circle their emotions. Both are scared despite strong feelings. But when they finally let go and fall fully into the relationship, they fall hard. The show emphasizes their romantic pull through lingering gazes and how drawn they are, even after just two months, from first meeting to the beginning of college. You see it in Chen Lu Zhou’s face lighting up when Xu Zhi is near and his desire to open up.
  • Emotional Resonance in Small Moments: Several moments show their emotional passion and understanding. Xu Zhi notices Chen Lu Zhou wearing a white shirt under his basketball jersey to avoid showing off. It’s not surface affection; it’s seeing who he really is. And it goes the same when it comes to Chen Lu Zhou noticing the small things about Xu Zhi. Example: in episode 22, Xu Zhi feels sad thinking about her dad going to Songbai Road to buy Wei Lin comics, recalling when he bought her favorite bread there. Without trying to let sadness show on her face, she leaves to get hot water. Chen Lu Zhou appears behind Xu Zhi who asks him why he came and he says, “I felt like you needed me.”

Kisses or Nah? On the Romance and Physical Intimacy

As for the lack of lip-on-lip kissing… I have no complaints. I’m not the type to dislike a drama just because there’s no kiss scene. What matters to me is the acting and storytelling. If the performances are strong, the characters are well-written, and the directing captures genuine chemistry and emotion, that’s more meaningful than a thoughtless plot filled with empty kissing scenes.

Passion in love is not just physical. It’s emotional resonance, longing, joy, intensity, vulnerability, and the magnetic pull two people feel – even in silence or subtle gestures. Although the novel took the route of Xu Zhi being flirty and physical with Chen Lu Zhou at the beginning of their relationship, and included more mature scenes to highlight their physical passion, the drama seems to highlight its focus on their emotional connection versus using physical passion as a means to draw in the romance.

Would an actual kiss scene be nice? Yes, it would have enhanced the emotional impact while watching their scenes, but is it necessary when we do feel chemistry already? No, it’s not necessary and not worth making a fuss over.

The biggest letdown is that while the two leads do have chemistry, the directing undermines it by trying to create unsuccessful ambiguity during their kissing scenes.

Resolutions and Final Reflections

Despite disliking how poorly the characters and story were set up, which is where most of my criticisms for dramas lie, I’m not going to raise the rating just because I enjoyed some eye candy. I’m someone who enjoys a well-done slow burn, strong storytelling, and solid character setup, but especially growth – whether in individual characters or within a relationship. In the end, I did feel like they told a conclusive story, not just a romance, but one that tied back to family trauma and its lasting effects.

Xu Zhi got closure with her mom’s death, though the issue and emotional impact wasn’t well shown. But Chen Lu Zhou got a more conclusive closure to his story. Chen Ji Shen telling Chen Lu Zhou he was honored to be his dad was closure Chen Lu Zhou needed to move on from feeling unloved from the Chen’s. Learning the truth about his biological father and confronting Fu Yu Qing helped him release bottled-up pain, even if he can’t forgive Fu Yu Qing as a father. Chen Lu Zhou also saw the love his mom tried to give him despite a tough upbringing. Being welcomed into Xu’s family deeply moved him, as their remembering his peanut allergy and avoiding it in meals showed care.

On the other hand, every time these two hug, I just feel so full. Their hugs feel so wholesome and full of love. It looks comforting and healing – the way they hold each other so tightly with a smile on their face. I don’t think many dramas make me feel that way when I see two people hugging…. or I’m just biased because Wang An Yu’s beautiful soundtrack is playing in the background.

Conclusion

So while Wang An Yu made me swoon, and even though I enjoyed seeing the two characters heal together in a wholesome way, I was still bored by the other elements. I skimmed through some scenes or let it play in the background during other ones. There was nothing groundbreaking, nor did it move me enough to want to revisit any moments. That said, I would still recommend it to those who don’t mind the lack of lip-on-lip kiss scenes and can overlook the fake ones, as the story is sweet and the two leads portrayed their characters well.

Pretty much enjoyed this drama. I agree with you about the lack of real kisses, their hugs were great and their real affection shone through. The only problem I have is that actress classmate of Chen’s who had a crush on him. Early on he made it clear to her that he had no romantic interest in her and she disappeared. In the later few episodes, Chen and his friend were outside looking for food and settled on a pancake. After he ordered, a woman showed up and wanted the same food as Chen. The cook told her that Chen had ordered the last pancake of that type, but Chen, while gazing at the woman intently, and kind of wistfully, gave her his order. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, and when the woman got her food, she gave a smirk and left. Wasn’t that woman the actress classmate? I can’t stand any whisper of cheating between the leads on a drama, so it really bothered me. Was he interested in the actress afterall? I was upset because I was afraid he would seek her out and have some kind of tender scene, but nothing happened and she wasn’t seen again. What is your take on that street scene?

Interesting take you had on that scene! I saw it as Chen Luzhou feeling bad because he just told her he hasn’t watched her drama and gave up the two red bean pancakes because (1) Gu Yan looked down upon hearing him not being up-to-date with her career (2) the two aren’t necessarily on bad terms and are old classmates.

My jealous nature is probably to blame. I love the dramas, but I need the male lead to be totally and completely in love with the female lead and no others, haha. Apart from this small scene, I was happy with him. Thanks for your reply.

Haha totally get it! We love devoted male lead who only has eyes for the female lead. Thought Wang An Yu did a good job showing Chen Lu Zhou’s disinterest towards Gu Yan’s advances, but he’s too much of a good guy to be mean. This scene made me think back to when he didn’t care to say goodbye Gu Yan at their high school farewell party but Xu Zhi forced him to. I think that’s why I didn’t connect this scene as him giving anything more than just an acquaintance vibes. Glad you stopped by and commented!
